Andrea Kunwald, MA, LMFT
Serves children ages 4-12, Individuals, Couples, and Families
Philosophy and Approach
Through the process of therapy, I assist the individual with restoring their innate sense of feeling heard, seen, and valued to promote balance, healing and new ways of being with self and others. Believing in the uniqueness of my clients and all components of ones’ life are interrelated, I integrate various approaches to meet the specific needs and challenges of the children, individuals, couples and family that come to see me. My work is collaborative, holistic, and strength-based. To make therapy valuable, my approach integrates several theories:
I specialize in treating children from ages 4 to 12 and draw on interventions from the Play Therapy modality.
Why Play Therapy?
Developmentally, the ability of children to participate in insight-based verbal therapy is not yet entirely formed. The magic of Play Therapy draws the child in instinctively, bypassing the need for verbal exploration and permitting the therapist to assess and respond to the underlying needs of the child. Play Therapy is exciting for the child, causing less resistance, and often provides more rapid change than with talk therapy.
I prefer to meet with parents regularly to support the treatment across all areas of a child’s life.
Experience and Education
My educational background includes a Master of Arts in Psychology with specification in Couple and Family Therapy from Antioch University, Seattle; and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Las Vegas, Nevada. I have worked with children (in the foster care system or not), individuals, couples and families in a diversity of settings, including private practice and community mental health. Additionally, I was trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy through Harborview’s Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress.
I am preferred provider with Premera, Regence, United Behavioral Health, First Choice, Kaiser Permanente (KFHP), and Aetna. Please call for inquiries regarding additional insurance plans.
