Philosophy and Approach
We are living in stressful times. I believe that psychotherapy can be an important component of a healthy lifestyle, enabling us to thrive, find meaning and enjoy our lives even in difficult circumstances.
My therapeutic approach is rooted in Existentialism and Phenomenology. Simply put, this perspective speaks to our fundamental experience of both the world we live in and our places as individuals in this world, and ultimately to the meaning we create for ourselves based on these experiences. I believe that this approach, which emphasizes meaning making, freedom, and choice, provides a solid foundation from which to engage in psychotherapy.
I am trained and proficient in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and incorporate these approaches in my work with individuals, couples and groups. Regardless of technique or approach, I believe in grounding the therapeutic relationship in respect, genuine dialogue and a willingness to learn.
Experience and Education
I earned my Master’s Degree (MA) in psychology from Seattle University and my Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in psychology from Rutgers College in New Brunswick, NJ. As part of my graduate education I engaged in a nine-month psychology internship in inpatient psychiatry at Harborview Medical Center. Upon completion of my graduate education I was hired as a permanent employee under the title of Mental Health Specialist. Over the course of my employment at Harborview I consider myself fortunate to have engaged in therapy in the context of a multidisciplinary milieu. I have had the opportunity to learn from psychiatrists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychiatric nurses and others. I have also encountered an incredibly diverse cross-section of humanity suffering from a variety of mental and emotional disturbances. I believe that this experience has offered me (and continues to offer me) a well-rounded perspective on both the spectrum of mental illness and the various strategies utilized to help those who suffer from them.
I also have several years of experience teaching a variety of psychology courses at the college level which has served to inform and expand the nature and philosophy of my psychotherapy practice. Accordingly, I tend to be proactive with my treatment plans, usually in the form of teaching and encouraging skill building and assigning homework as needed.
I am currently a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State and Washington State.
I am preferred provider with Premera, Regence, First Choice, Kaiser Permanente (KFHP), and Aetna. I am pending in-network status with United Behavioral Health. I accept allowable out-of-network fees in the meantime. Please call for inquiries regarding additional insurance plans.
