What is counseling?
Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Counselors/Therapists help clients (a) identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; (b) seek to improve communication and coping skills; (c) strengthen self-esteem; and (d) promote positive behavior change and optimal mental health.
How long does counseling take?
The answer to this question is multi-factorial. People often seek counseling for very specific issues and are able to find resolve after a few sessions. In 2001, a study in the Journal of Counseling Psychology found that most people felt better within 7 to 10 sessions. In another study, published in 2006 in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 88 percent of therapy clients reported improvements after just one session. For others, the issue is deeper rooted, and counseling can last for months or years.
