ABOUT
My name is Stephanie Blair and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LF61229188) for the state of Washington. Congratulations for taking this brave step to engage in your mental and emotional wellness journey. Please know, you have come to the right place, and I welcome you and the mess that may feel like your life. I am eager and humbled to work alongside you in your path towards change, whatever that looks like for you. Being human can very be challenging and I am pleased to tell you, you do not have to suffer alone.
Becoming a helping professional for youth and young adults has been a lifelong journey for me. From a young age, I knew I wanted to help people; especially those who struggled to fit in or find a voice for themselves. Throughout my life, I have experienced many personal traumas and losses of my own. I know what it can feel like to struggle with anxiety, depression, and making life decisions while dealing with self-doubt and insecurity. Reaching out for help was one of the greatest gifts I gave to myself in my early adulthood. I became a therapist because I wanted to dedicate my life to supporting youth heal and realize their inherent strength and potential the way I did.
In addition to my personal stories of pain and growth, my educational and professional experiences have allowed me to take my passion and put it to work helping youth and families from a variety of backgrounds. I received my Bachelor’s of Arts from the Evergreen State College in Psychology and Visual Arts. I then completed my Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Antioch University. During graduate school and afterwards, I gained clinical experience working with youth, teens families, and parents struggling with mental health, behavioral, and relationship issues in outpatient community health and school-based settings.
In my current practice, I work with teens, young adults, and families/parents who experience a variety of challenges including anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem/identity, communication issues, and adjustment related concerns. I am especially skilled with treating teens/young adults going through periods of transition, teens into adulthood, and young adults into their career, marriage, or having children of their own.
I see counseling as a collaborative endeavor, with best results stemming from a strong therapeutic rapport. I believe you are an expert on you and I can offer tools and new perspectives that we can apply to challenges or goals you want to work on in counseling. Therapy can take courage and vulnerability, so I value taking time and attention to create emotional safety and engagement in the treatment process. I also believe creativity and joy are also essential elements for quality treatment. I will integrate your interests and a sense of humor to assist in the development of a trusting, collaborative healing space.
I primarily draw from Family Systems and Attachment theories in my treatment approach. This means that I work from the the perspective that we exist in all relationships, with ourselves and others, carrying unique narratives, fears, and deeply ingrained beliefs about ourselves, the trustworthiness of others, and relationships in general. These beliefs and stories, wired to protect us, are often rooted in our early attachments or past traumas and can exist outside of our awareness. Sometimes these beliefs can become stuck, and cause unfortunate distress as we attempt to adapt to our current environment or face periods of change. We can mistake false beliefs as inherent flaws to ourselves, leading to cycles of shame and misguided attempts to resolve the problem. When we are met with acceptance and emotional safety to explore our identities and heart-wounds, shame loses it’s power, and space is made for our innate wisdom and strength to take the lead.
My focus will be on collaborating with you to identify your unique needs and formulating goals with respect to your personal values and stories. I also tailor treatment by drawing from models such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), narrative, experiential, and emotionally focused therapy depending on your specific needs and circumstances.
Through your engagement in this safe and collaborative therapeutic environment, my hopes are that you develop a renewed perspective of yourself based on your inherent strengths/qualities and become grounded in your unique value to the world. I look forward to the opportunity to support you in this exciting next step on your path towards self-compassion and personal discovery.
